Geocell is widely used in civil engineering and construction

Geocell (or cellular confinement system) is a three-dimensional, honeycomb-like structure made from strips of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or other polymer alloys that are expanded on-site to form a flexible, interconnected grid of cells. These cells are then filled with soil, sand, gravel, or concrete, creating a composite material with greatly enhanced load-bearing and erosion control properties. The primary function of geocell is to confine and stabilize infill materials, transforming them into a rigid, mattress-like structure.

Geocell is widely used in civil engineering and construction for soil stabilization on weak subgrades, slope and channel protection, retaining walls, load support for roads and parking areas on soft ground, and shoreline armoring. The cellular structure distributes vertical loads over a wider area, reducing pressure on the underlying soil and preventing rutting and lateral spreading. When used for erosion control, the cells prevent surface material from being washed away by water or wind while promoting vegetation growth.

Installation involves laying the compacted geocell sheets on a prepared surface, expanding them to their full height, anchoring them with stakes or pins, and then filling the cells with locally available material. Its lightweight nature makes transportation and handling efficient. Compared to traditional methods like riprap or concrete slabs, geocell offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and rapidly deployable solution. By leveraging the principle of confinement, this versatile geosynthetic provides long-term stability for infrastructure projects in challenging terrain and environmental conditions.
